it’s coming…

A whole new blog, a whole new project, and a whole new word for 2010…  are you ready????

The new blog will have the same type of content – just more of it and it will be a bit more craft focused – scrapbooking and a bunch of other stuff as well.

The new project – so…  everyone hates Mondays.  It has always been that way.  Monday has a bad rep – let’s change that and create Memorable Mondays – a whole year of them…  Are you with me???

The new word…  not so fast… THAT you will have to wait for!

We should be ready by New Year’s Eve to launch so keep your eyes open…

thriving sucks

There.  I said it.

I officially picked the wrong word for 2009.

2008’s word was “change” and it was perfect.  This year I did not do so good on picking a word… here is why.

I looked at “thrive” as a word meaning to excel, to continue to move forward, etc…  instead I got the bit about “thriving in bad conditions” which was not at all my goal for this year.  Here is where we did well…

  • We thrived as a family during a move to a new town and state in the middle of winter with 3 feet of snow on the ground.
  • We thrived as a family as Matt has continued to look for a job this past year.
  • We thrived as a family when other members of my family were dealing with issues of all sorts.
  • We thrived as a family as we struggled to figure out how to pay bills with less income.
  • We thrived as a family while dealing with the loss of my grandmother.

All of these are ways that we “thrived” this year.  Just not exactly what I was looking for as I entered 2009, however.

Now, even though it is only the 16th of December, I am looking to 2010.  A new year.  A new decade.  I am looking at what word will I kick off a whole new era with flair and style and capture all that I want the year and decade to be.  I think that I have it.

I am going old school, kickin’ it 1985 style with my word, but I don’t care.

On January 1, 2010 things will be changing here on my blog, and hopefully, in a lot of other ways as well.  I am making some changes and moving into some new paths and directions with my crafting, my family, and my goals in life.  I will be taking baby steps, but I really want to take my 2010 word and live it up and embrace it wholeheartedly.

Other years I have been very serious and thoughtful about my word.  Not this time.  This time it is about this one life we have to live.  This one trip on earth that we share.  It is about embracing all that is creative, fun, enjoyable, and exciting about life and just going for it.  I love my word and I will be happy to share it on 1/1/10…

Oh – and to kick off the new attitude a tad early, I was brave and went back to my real hair color at 10:00 pm Tuesday night…  holy cats, here we gooooooooo….

is plugged in again…

After my post on Wednesday last week, I unplugged.  I dialed into family time, friend time, and just being at home time.  Owen had time off school.  I had time off of work.  And we all had time just to be together.

I came to realize a few things during my time unplugged:

  1. If you host Thanksgiving, you take no pictures.  I feel like a scrapbooking failure as I totally did not get a lot a of good pics.  We always get a family picture of the 4 of on Thanksgiving – nope.  I always take tons of the table and food.  Nope.  Oooops.
  2. My kids are really funny.  Owen has an amazing sense of humor and can make jokes with the best of them.
  3. My grandpa really did do tons of magic tricks to us as kids…  now, he is doing them with my kids.
  4. There is nothing better than a day in comfy clothes, with a fire in the fireplace, Christmas lights twinkling, and nothing to do…  days like those are few and far between and should be cherished and relished.
  5. I make a mean turkey soup!
  6. My family is the most important thing in my life and I love them dearly and I don’t spend nearly enough time with them and I need to change this…
  7. I miss my brother and sister on holidays when they are not at home.
  8. Christmas movies and music make me smile.
  9. Ending old traditions is hard – aka the Choo Choo restaurant on Black Friday.
  10. Creating new traditions is fun – aka the fire truck parade in Sun Prairie on Black Friday.

Here are a few photos I did manage to get this weekend…

Owen and Nana playing checkers by the fire…

Owen teaching Grandpa Fetters to play Mickey Mouse Yahtzee…

mmm…  turkey…

Matt and Owen on the sleigh ride…

Jake and I on the same sleigh ride…

One of the fire trucks from the parade and the boys…

Owen being himself…

Jake “smiling” for me…

Beautiful horses…

Hope you had an amazing weekend!

PS – keep posted…  some fun holiday goodness is coming your way very, VERY soon…

feeling nostalgic…

I really am…  I have spent the morning working on a project that has had me going through thousands of Fiskateer photos.  It has had me almost in tears at points.

Pictures of the day that I met some of my best friends in the world…

Pictures of adventures we have had together over the last 3 1/2 years…

Days when it was all about being a member of something absolutely fun and amazing…

Not sure why I am so nostalgic today, but I am…  I guess some days it just all feels so long ago and so far away.  Today is one of those days that I miss being a crusader in orange, starting a movement that was amazing and wonderful.  Today is a day when I wonder how to get back to that more.  Today is a day I miss my friends and people who understand this side of who I am.  Today I miss that part of what I used to do.

Today – I want to be a loud and proud Fiskateer in an environment where people understand that and embrace it, rather than looking at me all crazy as the last crafter standing.

Today – I resolve to get that back into my life more often…  somehow.

I have been thinking a lot lately, which is a very dangerous thing for me to be doing.  I have been thinking about life, work, family, etc…  sometimes it is all a tad overwhelming if you truly stop to think about it.

A year ago I was in the throes of my commute to and from WI, desperate to sell our house in Chicago, and just praying for change to happen.  It did, and we all were here for New Year’s Eve.

This year I have been focusing on the word “thrive” – or at least I was planning to.  Sometimes all the hustle and bustle of regular life gets in the way and that focus is lost.  It has been lost a LOT for me lately if I am being truly honest.

Last year I embraced “change” whole-heartedly.  Why have I not been able to embrace “thrive” with the same passion and attention?  Was it the wrong word or the wrong year for that word?  I am not sure, but as it is now October and we are definitely NOT thriving, I think it is time to re-examine that word and it’s meaning.  It is time to look at what it really means and how I can begin to embrace it before 2009 is over.  As a family and as individuals, we deserve to thrive in all that we do, so it is time to get down to the business of it…  it is time to thrive!

From Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, I found this…

Main Entry: thrive
Pronunciation: \ˈthrīv\
Function: intransitive verb
Inflected Form(s): thrived or throve \ˈthrōv\; thrived also thriv·en \ˈthri-vən\; thriv·ing \ˈthrī-viŋ\
Etymology: Middle English, from Old Norse thrīfask, probably reflexive of thrīfa to grasp
Date: 13th century

1 : to grow vigorously : flourish
2 : to gain in wealth or possessions : prosper
3 : to progress toward or realize a goal despite or because of circumstances —often used with on <thrives on conflict>

thriv·er \ˈthrī-vər\ noun

Maybe it is time that I am the noun of that word – thriver – and get to it…

Okay, enough of this for today…  back to our regularly scheduled crafty blogging…

the rainout

For the first time in 5 years, we went to a Cubs game that was rained out.  We had a blast even though they didn’t play.  Matt and I got up early and headed down to Wrigley Field while the kids stayed with Matt’s parents.  We had time to walk around the park and watch the planes fly over while practicing for the Chicago Air and Water Show.  Then we sat and relaxed at the Captain Morgan Club until the Stadium Club opened.  Then, we headed upstairs for an amazing brunch…  this is a once-a-year or so thing, so when we get to do it, we enjoy it.

Then we headed down to our seats, watched all the pre-game hoopla with the National Anthem being capped off with an Air Force flyover… pretty cool.

Then, it rained…  a lot.

We finally went back upstairs and just hung out for a while.

Back to the seats.

Waiting, waiting, waiting… no rain…

Rain again.

Finally at just over 3 hours, I looked at Matt and declared defeat.  So we left.  By the time we got to the car, they had called the game.  So, we beat the rush out of the stadium.

At least we had time together with great food and drinks and just got to talk and laugh.  Sad there was no game to watch, but glad for our time together.

Quite the day to say the least!
